Stump Auger Removal
Large Scale Stump Removal Throughout the UK
RGL Forestry Ltd introduce a new specialist stump removal and restock site management process.
The RGL Stump Auger system utilises a +400hp 27 ton tracked excavator-based carrier that exerts a ground pressure of just 3psi (This can be reduced further with our wider track option). The auger bit is designed to withstand rocky and abrasive ground conditions, as well as embedded rocks inside the stumps themselves without incurring damage. The stump auger process planes any sized stumps to approximately 30mm thick shavings and this mechanical peeling opens up the wood fibres to encourage the decomposition and subsequent slow release of the nutrients contained within. The process is suited to most site types, from rocky to peat and is a particularly suitable alternative to traditional stump flipping, as it does not totally destroy established site plants or create silt and runoff issues.
Suitable for every site
The RGL Stump Auger opens up new opportunities for sites where stumps would traditionally be left in situ. The benefits of this speak for themselves, from the planting process through to aftercare management, nutrient rich soil, as well as more efficient ongoing weevil control.
The benefits of RGL Stump Augers & Grinders
- High productivity and economic rates per Hectare. Reduces overall establishment costs.
- Removes spraying cycles and beating up visits.
- Stumps & roots are planed into 30mm thick slices that decompose and return the nutrient to the soil, thereby reducing future requirements for fertiliser.
- Weevil habitat is destroyed.
- Ploughing ridges and hard pan are broken up and site drainage is improved.
- Water runoff and flash flooding risks after heavy rainfall are reduced.
- Works with any size stump and any soil type.
- Improves restocking density and tree seedling survival rates.
- Enables mechanical mounding or continuous mounding.
- Improves productivity for excavator mounding or scarification.
- Improves site safety for personnel.

UK Stump Grinder & Auger Hire
Where stumps are present on forestry, amenity or development sites, they can present significant problems when they have to be removed.
Excavating stumps is both hard work for machinery and can also lead to significant soil disturbance by leaving large holes. Excavating stumps also mixes upper topsoil and mineral subsoils together, which can have adverse effects on regrowth of trees and vegetation. Whole stumps can also be expensive to transport and dispose of.
Stump grinding is a useful method when minimal ground disturbance is desirable, as it only chips the stumps up and the surrounding roots, and with grinding depth also being carefully controlled, underground services, archaeology, or ecological features can be left undisturbed, even when in close proximity to the stumps being removed.
Our excavator-mounted stump grinder also has the advantage of over 9m of reach, so that stumps on banks, across ditches or in vertical slopes can all be removed.
Where ground conditions are unsuitable for a traditional stump grinder or where very large numbers of stumps are present, our tracked excavator-based stump augers are the way forward. The auger has a very fast cycle time and will remove up to 700 stumps in a day. It is also highly resistant to aggressive ground conditions and will work on very soft ground.
Bogmaster LGP 420hp
Excavator-based Stump Auger
The Bogmaster stump auger uses a +400hp 27 ton tracked excavator-based carrier that exerts a ground pressure of just 3psi (this can be reduced further with our wider track option). The auger bit is designed to withstand rocky and abrasive ground conditions, as well as embedded rocks inside stumps themselves without incurring damage. The stump auger process planes any sized stumps to approximately 30mm thick shavings, and this mechanical peeling opens up the wood fibres to encourage the decomposition and subsequent slow release of the nutrients contained within. The process is suited to most site types, from rocky to peat, and is a particularly suitable alternative to traditional stump flipping as it does not destroy established site plants or create silt and runoff issues.
Hitachi Powerpack Excavator
Stump Grinder
Hitachi Zaxis 225USRLC with 200HP second engine powerpack with AHWI SF1100H Stump Grinder head and 360-degree Rototilt rotator. This reduced tail-swing machine weighs only 22ton but has 200HP for just the grinder head. Equipped with quick-change carbide-tipped hammers, this machine is ideal for any size stumps.
The Rototilt allows the grinder to reach almost any angle from steep inclines to awkward banks and ditches and is particularly suited for hard-to-reach stumps across obstacles or on sloping ground. Fully forestry guarded and equipped for night working. Supplied with 800mm wide track pads and forestry track guards, this mulcher can also be supplied with 1.6M wide track pads for work on soft peat or wet ground.
AHWI Prinoth RT400
Drum Stump Grinder
The most powerful stump grinder in the UK, this 440hp monster is the fastest way to remove large numbers of stumps on Site & Tree Clearance and forestry plantations. Grinding the largest stumps right out to bare soil in minutes and with the ability to work in aggressive and abrasive soil types, mounded and steep sites, this machine is simply unbeatable for efficiency and speed. For forestry planting and re-stock sites, this grinder can also be used to “strip-rotovate” 90cm wide planting rows through deep brash and stumps – enabling planting that minimises deer predation and maximises take-up for new planting – without having to conventionally mulch the entire site area. This enables highly efficient planting in rows, with deep-rotovated growth zones, as well as minimising silt and soil run-off in areas of high rainfall, or where retention of brash on site is desirable for other ecological or practical reasons.
